Goat Milk Stuff’s adventures into soapmaking originated in 2005 out of our desire to not use chemicals on our children’s skin. I had all the children in the bathtub one day, just letting them splash around when I picked up the baby wash I had always used and looked at the ingredient list. I was shocked to discover that it was full of both petroleum based chemicals and other chemicals I couldn’t even recognize.

I had spent years trying to make sure the children were eating healthy food and I was upset with myself that I’d never before considered what I was using on their skin. I knew that the skin is the largest organ in the body and I decided right then and there that I was going to learn how to make soap only with ingredients that I could trust.

After making my first batch of goat milk soap, I put a bar into the shower. My husband’s fingers soon stopped cracking and splitting. Since this was a problem he had suffered with for years, I knew I had something special. But I wasn’t yet ready to turn it into a business, so I set about perfecting my soapmaking and spent the next two years creating the “most perfect” bar of goat milk soap I could.

In 2008, we decided to sell our soap at the local Apple Festival. The weeks following were full of customers contacting us about their eczema. I’d never dealt with eczema before, but I started hearing the stories of the misery it caused. And the most amazing thing was happening – our soap was relieving their eczema symptoms.

The soap base is made from glycerin that has been extracted from pure coconut oil and goats milk. The glycerin is distilled and deodorized twice, for a nice bar of soap that can be scented to suit your personal tastes. This soap base is also free of surfactants and is alcohol free. The soap base is also great for making aromatherapy soaps; since the soap base has been deodorized, the wonderful smell of your favorite essential oils fragrance the bar. Also, deodorizing the glycerin allows you to use less essential oil, saving time and money. The soap base is great for using with molds, and wont stick to even the most intricate soap mold. This soap base is also known to keep its clearness, rather than yellowing (as other soap bases are known to do). Additionally, the soap base is made with skin moisturizing glycerin, which is know to draw moisture from the air into the skin. This soap base is free of any animal fats, and will rinse cleanly off of skin.

When I was a boy, my hands used to get dry in the winter, and my skin would crack and bleed. We lived on a small farm and had three goats named Nevada, Gotmy, and Jubilee. My mom started making goat milk soap with our leftover milk, and I stopped having dry skin. Goat milk is wonderful for sensitive skin, because it’s full of vitamins and nutrients. The soaps are also handcrafted, which means all the natural, moisturizing glycerin produced in the soapmaking process is retained, unlike commercial soaps where it’s taken for other products. Moreover, our goat milk soap has no artificial foaming agents, harsh surfactants, or harmful chemicals, just goat milk and non-GMO botanical oils. Some bars are scented with 100% natural essential oils and have ground oatmeal as a gentle exfoliant; others have light fragrance. For years, my mom sold it to friends and family who had eczema and psoriasis, then a couple, local, natural food stores. Word spread, and more people came to her for soap, which she continued to make on the side. Eventually, she and my Dad retired from their careers and moved aboard a hospital ship that served the coast of Africa. My Mom had been a nurse and doing wound care in places like Madagascar and Benin while my Dad coordinated the ship’s transportation vehicles, was a perfect fit for them. My wife, Katy, and I took over the family soap business. We’ve added shea butter lotions, beeswax lip balms, soy candles, sulfate free shampoo, and conditioner, and have other formulations in the works.
